Why these made the list
We started with 55 microwaves in the under $200 pool. We shortlisted units from established brands with complete power and capacity information, and removed near-duplicate listings of the same model in different colors. Categories were assigned using the stated specs: countertop, over-the-range, built-in or RV, compact, large, sensor, inverter, smart, retro, air fry, and grill. The prices on this page are read live from the store listing and are not part of our ranking because they change. No unit in this guide was tested or measured; the guide relies on specifications, product names, and seller-stated features.
Things to weigh before buying
Power and cavity size: what they mean for cooking
Power is the largest single spec in this category. The under $200 pool spans models with under 800 W up to 1200 W or more. A higher wattage microwave usually heats food faster, which matters when you are reheating dense casseroles or defrosting meat. The 1200 W models in this list sit at the top; the 800 to 999 W compacts are best for lighter reheating.
Cavity size is separate from wattage. A microwave can be powerful but small, or large but moderate. If you often cook plates or big bowls, look for a 1.5 cu ft or larger model. If counter space is the constraint, an under 1.0 cu ft unit makes more sense.
Sensor cooking, inverter, and other convenience features
Sensor cooking uses a sensor to detect steam or humidity and adjust the cook time automatically. Several picks in this guide list sensor cooking, including the Panasonic models and the Farberware 1.6 cu ft model. This can remove some guesswork when reheating soup, rice, or vegetables.
Inverter technology changes the way power is delivered, allowing the oven to maintain lower power levels without cycling the magnetron on and off. In this guide, inverter models from Panasonic and Sharp show this feature in the seller's specifications. Inverter technology is not required for basic reheating, but it can help with delicate foods and more even defrosting.
Turntable and flatbed designs
Most countertop microwaves use a turntable that rotates food for more even heating. The FDA's safe food handling guidance says to cover food, stir, and rotate for even cooking. If there is no turntable, the FDA advises rotating the dish by hand once or twice during cooking.
A flatbed design removes the turntable in favor of a smooth base. The Sharp flatbed pick in this guide has no turntable, so you may need to rotate dishes yourself or rely on its inverter cooking modes. Flatbeds can be easier to wipe out, and they leave more usable floor space for rectangular dishes.
Special functions: grill, air fry, and smart controls
A microwave with a grill can brown or crisp the surface of food, while an air fry microwave is designed to add a fried texture. Each of these roles adds a function that can replace a separate appliance. The Black+Decker 5-in-1 and Emerson grill pick show the range in this budget segment.
Before choosing a multi-function unit, compare the base microwave specs, not just the extra function. An air fry microwave with under 1.0 cu ft capacity may work for snacks but not for a full sheet of chicken. It is also worth checking which accessories come in the box, since the seller listing does not always state them.
Built-in, over-the-range, and RV installation
Most of the under $200 market is made of countertop units, but the pool also contains built-in, over-the-range, and RV-specific models. Over-the-range and built-in models have different installation requirements than countertop models. RV models are sized and made for installation in a vehicle.
If you are replacing an existing built-in or RV unit, match the cutout dimensions and mounting pattern before ordering. Countertop models are not interchangeable with built-in or over-the-range models without additional trim kits, and the seller listing may not state those kit options.
Safety, cleaning, and recycling
Microwave ovens are regulated as radiation-emitting products in the United States, and the FDA requires performance standards for them. If the door, hinge, latch, or sealing surface is damaged, stop using the oven until it is serviced.
For everyday use, follow the FDA's microwave food safety advice: cover food, stir and rotate for even cooking, and allow standing time. When it is time to replace a unit, check whether your local program accepts small appliances for donation or recycling. The EPA recommends donating or recycling electronics when that option exists.
Questions
How many watts do I need in a microwave under $200?
For most reheating and defrosting, 800 to 999 W is workable, and several compact picks in this list sit in that range. If you often cook from raw or reheat large, dense dishes, choose a 1000 W or higher model. The top 1200 W picks in this guide are strong for faster, more even heating. The right wattage also depends on your typical portion sizes and patience.
What is inverter technology in a microwave?
Inverter technology lets the microwave deliver a steady, adjustable level of power instead of cycling the magnetron on and off at full power. This can help cook delicate foods more evenly and defrost more gently. In this guide, inverter models from Panasonic and Sharp indicate this feature in the seller's specifications. You do not need inverter technology for basic reheating, but it is a useful upgrade if you cook fish, eggs, or chocolate in the microwave.
What does sensor cooking do?
A sensor cooking microwave detects steam or humidity inside the cavity and adjusts the cook time automatically. That means you do not have to guess how long to reheat leftovers, and the oven can stop or change power when the food is ready. The Farberware 1.6 cu ft model and the Panasonic picks in this guide all list sensor cooking. Sensor controls are most useful for frequently reheated foods like soup, rice, and vegetables.
Can I use a microwave with a damaged door or seal?
The FDA regulates microwave ovens as radiation-emitting products and requires performance standards. If the door, hinge, latch, or sealing surface is visibly damaged, stop using the oven until it is repaired by a qualified technician. Damage in these areas is not a normal risk, but it should be handled carefully. Daily cleaning of door surfaces and hinges helps keep the oven working as intended; use a damp cloth and follow the maker's cleaning instructions.
Should I recycle my old microwave or throw it away?
The EPA recommends donating or recycling electronics when possible, and many communities accept small appliances at e-waste drop-off sites. Before recycling, remove any food residue and check whether the unit still works, because a working microwave can often be donated to a thrift store or charity. If you choose to recycle, contact your local waste agency for accepted items and drop-off locations.
Do I need a turntable in a microwave?
A turntable rotates food to help distribute heat. If your microwave has one, leave it in place unless the maker says otherwise. If you choose a flatbed model, such as the Sharp flatbed pick in this guide, the FDA's safe handling advice applies: rotate the dish by hand once or twice during cooking when there is no turntable and always allow standing time before checking temperature.
